Agnes Bertothy (Hungary)

How the idea for your silent story was born?

I always wanted to write a story about something personal, so I choose to tell about school bullying because I experienced it from all the possible sides. When I was younger, due to personal problems, I started as a bully in elementary school, later I was bullied and sometimes I was a passive viewer of bullying.

What's the story about?

The story follows a young girl who is bullying others in school. My aim was to analyze her reasons, her motives and understand what makes someone a bully. In this case, due to problems at home, the girl is carrying a heavy weight that causes tension in her. When this tension explodes it hurts the ones that are close and isolates her from the others. The monster is an impersonation of this undetermined tension and anger that builds up in her. At the end the story offers a solution showing that, with patience, monsters can be tamed and walls can be teared down.

Why have you decided to enter the contest?

Since the first time I’ve visited the Children’s Book Fair in Bologna, I was fascinated by the silent book section. I wanted to try myself in front of a jury that represents the quality I want to reach in the future. Being selected among the finalists is a great feedback that I’m on the right path towards that.

Your story is dedicate to...
