NEAR NEIGHBORDS, FAR AWAY FRIENDS

Melina Lebel (Germany)

How the idea for your silent story was born?

I recalled how hard it was for me as a child to make friends and how deeply we long for true connections – something that resonates with both kids and adults alike.

What's the story about?

The story follows two shy neighbors longing for friendship, but the first “hello” takes time. Designed like a two-person play, it keeps full focus on their bond. The setting blends a theater stage and a courtyard, with the book’s fold forming the space between their homes. This creates depth, allowing readers to feel both the closeness and distance between the characters.

Why have you decided to enter the contest?

This competition is a wonderful chance to celebrate storytelling through illustration. I joined because I love how it brings creatives together and gives space for unique ideas to grow and be seen.
