The idea for this story was inspired by my experience as a child protection specialist and children’s rights advocate for the victims of the war on drugs during our previous government. Although it is a work of fiction, the narrative is grounded in reality, highlighting the alarming increase in child neglect and abandonment due to the incarceration or killing of their parents without due process.
Rocky Boy’s Sunday tells a heartfelt story of a child’s unconditional love for his father. Despite his challenging circumstances, Rocky Boy makes it a point to visit his father every Sunday. His journey serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles faced by abandoned children who often suffer from neglect in poor communities. It’s a testament to resilience and the bond of love that perseveres even in the toughest of situations.
Participating in the silent book competition is an excellent opportunity for me to use my picture book as a tool for advocacy. As a visual artist, my goal is to be the voice of marginalized children who are often unheard of.
