THE FLOWER THIEF

Elizaveta Iakovleva (Russia)

How the idea for your silent story was born?

The idea actually came from my mom. I showed her my random illustration of a bee stealing a flower and asked, “Why would a bee steal?” Her answer inspired me so much that I immediately started developing a story, adding intrigue and humor.

What's the story about?

This is a story about a tiny but brave bee with a big, kind heart. She steals flowers—not for herself, but to create a garden for her grandmother, who can no longer fly. Neither the suspicious looks of fellow bees, nor dangerous animals, nor humans will stop her. Through exhaustion and challenges, she pushes forward to bring her plan to life and give her grandmother a piece of beauty.

Why have you decided to enter the contest?

A silent book contest is the perfect opportunity to share my story, as I love telling narratives purely through illustrations. Finding a visual language that speaks to everyone is a challenge that truly inspires me.
