ALI DI CARTA

Giorgia Zanin, Marco Sergio Erculiani (Italy)

How the idea for your silent story was born?

Marco: Thinking about the flowing of time and libraries, magical places where every dream can become real, travelling with imagination. And to booksellers, guardians of freedom of thought and wish gifters.

Giorgia: Sergio contacted me and asked me if I would like to work together on a project. When he sent me this story, I immediately loved it: it was so poetic and delicate, and I wanted to mantain this spirit while turning it into images, also without sacrificing my personal imagination and concept. I hope I succeed in my intention!

What's the story about?

Marco: The story talks about a bookseller and her seashore bookstore. One of those special ones who knows exactly which book suits every child. And in doing so, she gives them paper wings to fly, to soar above reality. Wings to be free.  But time passes relentlessly, and the bookseller grows old. Yet, before closing, she will give a pen to each girl and boy, so they can write their own future with it.

Giorgia: “Ali di carta” is a story about time and how we live that time. It is a story about imagination and freedom. It is about happiness, too. I think that everybody should have in their life a person like the bookseller: someone who helps you to find your own way to fly, your vocation, whatever is its shape.

Why have you decided to enter the contest?

Marco: To have the possibility to measure my creativity giving voice to wordless paper and to have the chance to tell as many people as possible, through the images, the story of many and the wishes of all.

Giorgia: When Sergio asked me to work together on his story, I thought it could have been the perfect occasion to measure myself with something new, as I had never worked on a wordless book before. It all started like “ok, I try”, and I still can’t believe that my illustrations are among finalists!
